A Refresher On the Wright Farm Proposal On Tap Tonight
Articles 9 and 10, dealing with the Wright Farm land acquisition, are on the agenda for what could be the final session of annual Town Meeting.
Annual Town Meeting is almost two months old, but could conclude tonight as Articles 9 and 10, along with a few smaller items, are all that remains on the warrant.
Articles 9 and 10, of course, are nearly identical proposals to purchase a large portion of the Wright Farm property on Grove Street. The latter article is a Plan B, which would have been moved if the plans did not include conservation, which they do.
The CPC has recommend the purchase of about 13.5 acres of the Wright Farm property for conservation purposes, with $500,000 paid up front, with the remainder of the $2.95 million sale price, plus additional expenses associated the transaction, to be bonded.
Under the recommendation, the bulk of Wright Farm would be purchased for open space purposes using Community Preservation Act funds, with a conservation restriction to be put on the land. The town would have first right of refusal on the small parcel with a house, barn and another structure being retained by the seller.
During discussions leading up to Town Meeting, there was discussion about the value of this space, which is located in the northwest corner of town, near the borders with Bedford and Burlington.
While some have debated whether that's a good place for affordable housing, should the retained parcel hit the market, others have noted the land's value as open space, due to is proximity with the Burlington Landlocked Forest, the Paint Mine Conservation Area in Lexington and Bedford’s Old Reservoir.
