The Lexington Bicentennial Band was founded by Don Gillespie, Jr. in 1975. He was its music director until he retired in 1996.

1. Citizens World Fair
Where/When: Cary Memorial Building, 1605 Massachusetts Ave.; 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 11
Why Go: Citizens Bank inside the Stop & Shop is hosting an evening of cultural celebration and discovery. People of all ages can enjoy cultural activities, songs, dance and live performances from local cultural groups and organizations. A Ping Pong exhibition by Citizens Banker Jane Chui, 2010 US Open Sandpaper Champion will be featured.

2. Yellow Balloon Fair
Where/When: Community Nursery School 2325 Massachusetts Ave; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Satuday, May 12
Why Go: This year Lexington’s Community Nursery School will be hosting their 40th Annual Yellow Balloon Fair, a family fair that promises oodles of fun activities.
Pricing: $2 per child, $1 for adults and $1 for game tickets
3. Lexington Bicentennial Band Spring Pops Concert
Where/When: Lexington High School, 251 Waltham St.; 7 p.m., Saturday, May 12
Why Go: Because it's the Lexington Bicentennial Band's spring pops concert at the LHS Commons and the set list for this free concert includes "The Genius of Ray Charles," "Pirates of the Carribean" and "Schindler's List."

4. Lex Fly a Kite!
Where/When: William Diamond Middle School, 99 Hancock St.; 1 p.m., Sunday, May 13
Why Go: It's a free kite festival at the Chiesa Farm Conservation Land in Lexington, and an inexpensive Mother's Day item. This event, listed on the Revolutionary Revelry calendar, is presented by Creating Community (Lexington residents Deb Jackson and Renuka Srinivasan) in conjunction with Kites over New England and the Blue Hills Observatory.
Pricing: Free if you have a kite; $5 for materials to build your own kite and $3 for a kite that's ready to fly.
5. Metropolitan Wind Symphony Band Concert
Where/When: Cary Memorial Building, 1605 Massachusetts Ave,; 2 p.m., Sunday, May 13
Why Go: Select students of music teachers who are members of the by-audition Metropolitan Wind Symphony concert band will join the MWS on the stage for the second half of this concert. Also, MWS Music director Lewis J. Buckley will give a pre-concert lecture beginning at 1:30 p.m.
