Lexington Farmers Market Opens Today
The LFM's eighth season gets underway at 2 p.m. today, May 29.
Get ready to get fresh and shop local at the same time: The Lexington Famers Market's eighth season opens today.
Market sponsors will ring the opening bell at 2 p.m. this afternoon, May 29, and the market will remain open through 6:30 p.m. The season extends through the summer and into October.
As part of the opening day festivities, Lexington resident Eric Eid-Reiner will play contra dance tunes, there will be a fife and drum performance and Valery Marcantonio and her Tap Dancers will conclude the afternoon's entertainment, according to the LFM website.
Located at the corner of Mass Ave and Woburn Street, the popular Lexington Farmers Market is now in its eighth year, and earned the title of Best of Boston in 2010. Each week, there are dozens of farmers, artisans and other vendors. Last year, two wineries were added for the first time, and this year Turtle Creek will join Charlton Orchards and Coastal Vineyards in the LFM lineup.
Discussing the Lexington Farmers Market's role in the community before the opening last year, Market Manager Martha Slone said people from Lexington and beyond view the weekly market as a one-stop shopping desintation, a place to pick up a few select items and a community meeting place.
“It’s a chance to reconnect – or just connect – with a local farm,” she said. “In our society, we are so disconnected with where our food comes from. To me, that’s the most exciting thing for me, to see people actually there talking to the farmers they’re getting their food from.”
