Lexington Mini Mates Skaters Capture Bronze at Colonial Classic

The Mini Mates, Hayden's representative in U.S. Figure Skating's Juvenile Division, took third at a recent competition at Lowell's Tsongas Arena and hope to leverage that into an even better finish at Easterns later this month in Hershey, Penn.

The following is a press release provided by Kim Thomas, PR manager for the Mini Mates.

While many of us are still fast asleep in our beds, local skaters Sophia Caira, Priyana Dey, Nikki King, Emily Melsky, Hanna Tuomi, Eleanor VanEvera, Sophie Williamson, Laura Xu and Rachel Zhang are honing their skating skills preparing to compete with their synchronized skating team, the Mini Mates.

The Mini Mates synchronized skating team competed at the 28th annual Colonial Classic on Jan. 8 at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, bringing home a bronze medal in the U.S. Figure Skating Juvenile Division. Coached by Kendra Flanagan and Assistant Coach Sam Mortimer.

There is no question that the Mini Mates theme (choreographed by Saga Kranz), "Fame… you will remember our name" is apropos. The team has been diligently practicing and it shows; power and speed were their forte.

Coach Kendra said, "Although the team didn't have their best skate of the season, the team showed that overall they have a strong program that is technically difficult. I am extremely proud of how the team skated each element in the program. They stuck together as a team and had fun and showed great sportsmanship towards their competitors. We will go home and continue to practice hard for our upcoming competition, where we hope to have a cleaner skate."

The complexity of the elements in their program combined with the speed and power they showed on Sunday has them poised to take center stage in their Division at Easterns in Hershey, Penn. at the end of this month. They will be skating with their team locally at the Hayden-sponsored New England Challenge Cup, Ned O’Brien Rink, Woburn, on Jan. 21.
