Lions Club Carnival Headed for Hastings Park

The annual Fourth of July carnival will be held at Hastings Park due to fields work around Lexington's Center Recreation Complex.

Construction has forced the Lexington Lions Club’s 56th annual Fourth of July Carnival to find a new location, and it’s just yards from its regular spot around the .

Nearby will be home to this year’s carnival, to open from Tuesday, July 3 through Saturday, July 7. According to plans presented at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Monday, June 4, the carnival will be slightly smaller due the plot and configuration, but it’s unclear which rides will be affected or eliminated.

The move to Hastings Park received approval from the Board of Selectmen on Monday, June 5. According to the plans, equipment will arrive on Sunday, July 1, with setup on Monday and the opening at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3. Fireworks are planned for Thursday, July 5, as well as an early opening that day for students from the Perkins School for the Blind and LABBB Collaborative.

The plans call for the fireworks to be set off from inside the track at the recreation complex, and for the carnival to be slightly smaller than in past years due to the location and the need for an L-shaped configuration when a carnival typically takes a triangle-shape. Public Works Director Bill Hadley said the carnival should not have a long-term negative impact on the grass at Hastings Park, so long as it is treated properly following the departure, as the grounds have been in the past.

“We’ve done it for many years,” Hadley said, “And it’s come back OK.”
