The special election was to determine who would claim the US Senate seat John Kerry left upon his appointment as Secretary of State. Mo Cowan, the former chief of staff for Gov. Deval Patrick, was named interim senator in January.

Leading up to the election, scuttlebutt across the state was that a low turnout was expected as the special was competing with sports, summer and Whitey Bulger for attention.
