Planning on a "Tipsy Tow" on New Year's Eve? Not in Lexington

With the chance of showers and dropping temperatures tonight, your best bet is to get a designated driver lined up before hitting the town tonight.

You may have seen it on Facebook.

"No excuses, folks. Don't drink and drive-and don't ride with anybody who does. Tipsy Tow offered by AAA: You don't have to be a AAA member, from 6pm-6am on New Year's Eve/Day they will take your drunk self and your car home for FREE. Save this number... 1-800-222-4357. Please re-post this if you don't mind"

The message went viral this week, posted on Facebook pages and shared on sites across the country.

The problem is, the service is not available in all areas. In fact, according to the AAA website, clubs in only 17 states are offering the free rides home and no programs in the New England region make the list.

An additional "AAA Justice Link" website lists outside resources aimed at reducing drunk driving, including cab companies and private organizations that will give you a lift in your own car. Although Massachusetts has a few such programs (Safe Ride Solutions in Norfolk and Suffolk,) options are fewer around Lexington.

Earlier this week, officials urged motorists to be extra cautious on the roads this New Years Eve, traditionally one of the biggest party nights of the year.

Add to that, the Lexington Police Department is participating in a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization and the National Weather Service says there's a chance of showers into tonight, which, along with falling temperatures, could lead to some slick conditions.

Bottom line is, if you plan to drink this New Year's Eve, please remember to secure your own safe ride home before heading out.

Thanks for the timely warning---I just read about on FB...and it insisted it was "Nationwide".

Hello, Thank you for helping AAA get the correct information out into the public. We appreciate it! As you mentioned, Tipsy Tow is available only in select areas. The AAA Newsroom and AAA Justice Link are the best sources for information.
