POLL: What's Driving Your Interest in the Third Middlesex Race?

One seat, two Republicans, five Democrats, retiring incumbent. With three weeks remaining before the Sept. 6 primary, that's an equation for a lot of interest in the race for the Third Middlesex state senate seat.

State politics swarmed West Concord last night for a League of Women Voters-hosted candidates forum featuring all seven state senate hopefuls Third Middlesex District that drew a crowd so large that organizers and public safety officials had to turn attendees away from the Harvey Wheeler Community Center.

The Third Middlesex District, currently represented by retiring state Sen. Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln, includes Bedford, Carlisle Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham and Weston, along with parts of Lexington (precincts 3, 8 and 9) and Sudbury.

Of the seven candidates, two are Republicans and five are Democrats, including Lexington's Mike Barrett, who declared his intentions to run prior to Fargo's retirement announcement.

With three weeks still to go before the Sept. 6 primary, we want to know, What, if anything, is driving your interest in this race? Just curious? Supporting a candidate? Still on the fence? Or maybe you don't care at all. Take our poll or let us know in the comment section below.

Dolan. Definitely Dolan. Women are already under-represented in our legislature.

Women notwithstanding, the glut of Democrats, 80% in our legislature needs to be diluted. And politics should NOT be a career.

Mara Dolan is a serious supporter of working people and their rights. Governor Walker of Wisconsin has shocked people all over the country with his relentless attacks on the rights of workers. For many years, working people have seen their position eroded by politicians even as the same politicians have passed tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. We need more elected officials who are openly sympathetic to workers' rights, and Mara stands out from the pack.

Mara appreciates the role collective bargaining has played not only in defending the rights of specific workers' unions but in providing for the well-being of the whole middle class. She is endorsed by major state unions, including the Massachusetts AFL-CIO.

Mara is also endorsed by a host of progressive Democratic officials, including Congressman Mike Capuano and State Senator Jamie Eldridge.

Besides that, Mara is a listener. If you meet her for the first time, between now and election day, you will be impressed not only at the way she articulates her own ideas but by the way she listens to yours. If you visit her after she is your senator, to lobby for your position on Beacon Hill, you will find her a principled and honest representative who wants to hear your ideas.

Mara Dolan as a state senator is something to look forward to, and I encourage you to support her and help her get there. Your vote on September 6 can make a critical difference.

Scott Walker is an American hero... someone who has taken on the vast union hackerama of unsustainable benefits. The union-funded recall failed as Wisconsin citizens saw the light.
