Visions for Vacancies in Lexington: 1688 Mass Ave

A weekly look at one vacant storefront, building or structure in the community.

Our new Visions for Vacancies feature starts this week on Lexington Patch. Here you’ll find a place where you can weigh in with your ideas about what kind of businesses you’d like to see occupying empty storefronts around town.

Each week, we’ll highlight a vacant building, storefront or structure around town. And we’ll leave it you, the Lexington community, to sound off on what you’d like to see there before any plans go before town boards.

This week we’re taking a look at 1688 Mass Ave., a vacant storefront in Lexington Center.

It’s one of the few empty spaces left in the old Cohoes building, with Cambridge Trust Company, Hair Cuttery and Panera Bread all having opened in adjacent spaces over the past few years.

The sign on the window advertises retail space for lease. But what would you like to behind those brick and glass walls? The area has several places to grab a bite and assorted retail offerings, but maybe you have an idea of what would compliment existing businesses or fill a void of what’s lacking in Lexington Center.

So, if you had your way—and, for the purpose of this discussion, let’s try not to focus too much on zoning restrictions or amendments no tap for annual Town Meeting—what would be your vision for this vacancy? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

I would like to see a small market, where local small-scale growers could sell seasonal vegetables, flowers and produce (meat / fish). Like an old fashioned butcher's / green-grocers shop ... perhaps with saw-dust on the floor too !!

Love this topic. I think about it a lot as I see the empty store fronts. No more hair or nail shops, no more sandwich shops and no more coffee houses. Love to see a fresh and local meat & seafood shop, a high end children's clothes boutique or a Mom and Pop style restaurant that serves a plated family breakfast. We have to go to Concord for that now.

A few suggestions so far via twitter include a bookstore and a place like "Paint A Plate," where folks can do crafts and decorate pottery.

There used to be a 'Paint-a-Plate' place ... but it went out of business.

I also would like to see a meat market that also sells fresh fish. And we do need a mom and pop restaurant that one can get a decent breakfast.
