The Boston Globe has ranked the state’s top 100 publicly held companies by composite performance and two Lexington companies made the list. Cubist Pharmaceuticals was the highest ranked, checking in at No. 6 after rising 70 spots from its No. 76 position on the 2012 list. Located on Hayden Avenue, Cubist is a bio-pharmaceutical company that, according to its website, is "focused on the research, commercialization and creation of pharmaceutical products that address unmet medical needs in the acute care environment." The Joint Committee on Revenue in the Massachusetts legislature held a hearing this week on the notion of a potential meals tax holiday for August and one supporting group is liking its chances. According to the state's Restaurant and Business Alliance (R.A.B.A), the hearing held Tuesday for the Meals Tax Holiday Bill saw "no sign of opposition" to the measure. Twelve legislators have signed on to the bill primarily sponsored by Rep. Keiko Orrall of Lakeville and Sen. Michael O. Moore of Millbury. If passed, the legislation would go into effect from Sunday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 15. "We should offer a Meals Tax Holiday to benefit employees and small local business owners inside Massachusetts to help stimulate the economy," said …

Nathan Rothstein’s latest initiative is seeking support via Kickstarter.
You might remember Nathan Rothstein from when his startup Swellr was taking off and earning high praise during the MassChallenge compeition in 2011, or from when the LHS grad (Class of 2002) was coming up through the Lexington schools. Now Rothstein’s latest initiative, Project Repat, has launched a Kickstarter campaign as a way to up ante on its ability to transform memory-rich T-shirts into more fashionable and functional products. The crowdsourcing also aims to kcikstart a women-led manufacturing business, Lawrence-based 99 Degrees Custom Manufacturing. “Our t-shirts are our trophies,” the Kickstarter page says. “We get a new one for every race we run, every event we participate in, and every sporting event we attend. Two Bedford women have opened iDance Boston, a new studio on the Burlington-Lexington line that, according to the owners, blurs the line between dance and exercise.

Celebrities and wannabes moving to music has taken the Reality TV world by storm, and that has spilled over into scores of studios opening up, including a new one in our neck of the woods.
