 ard University and Oxford University\, where he was a Rhodes Scholar and
  has worked as a reporter for The New York Times\, taught at Princeton\,
  became Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Uni
 versity Library at Harvard and has been a visiting professor or fellow a
 t many universities and institutes for advanced study. His outside activ
 ities include service as a trustee of the New York Public Library and th
