2014 Summer Recreation and Leisure Opportunities in Lexington

The Lexington Recreation Department is pleased to offer a variety of programs for children, teenagers and adults throughout the summer.  We invite residents of all ages to “come out and play” with us this summer!

YOUTH CAMPS AND CLINICS

The Teddy Bear Picnic program offers well-rounded morning activities for children ages three – entering Kindergarten.  Children participate in games, arts and crafts, story time, nature and singing activities with friendly, experienced and enthusiastic staff members at the Old Res picnic area.  Each morning ends with swimming time and water activities at the Old Res.  The weekly program runs for seven weeks, June 30 through August 15 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon.  Morning Extended Day and afternoon Lunch Bunch options are also available for Teddy Bear Picnic this summer.

The Discover the Fun Day Camp will again offer seven weeks of fun and enjoyment.  Each week offers a different theme for the participants and includes daily swimming at the pool, sports and games, arts and crafts, nature and fitness activities and weekly special events.  This weekly program is open to children entering Grades 1 – 5, and runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., June 30 through August 15 at Lexington High School.  New for 2014 is a morning and afternoon extended day option.

The Minuteman Sports Clinics – a summer tradition in Lexington – offer a variety of one-week sports clinics for children ages 4 through 14.  A high school coach, teacher or college player who brings their extensive sport knowledge and experience to the program directs each clinic.

The programs are:  Boys Hoop half day and full day with Coach Bob Farias; Street Hockey, Rollerblading and Ultimate Frisbee and Games, directed by LHS P.E. teacher and girls Ice Hockey Coach, Amanda Ciarletta; Girls Hoop I and Girls Hoop II  directed by Steve Solly, LHS Girls Varsity Coach; Field Hockey and Volleyball clinics with Barbara Locke, Woburn High Varsity Coach; Girls Softball Hitting Clinic and Introduction to Badminton directed by Frank Pagliuca, LHS Coach and Teacher; Football Clinic coordinated by Steve Solly, LHS teacher and coach; Baseball and Junior Golf  with LHS P.E. teacher and Coach Jason Rajotte; Youth Track  coordinated by Bridge School P.E. Teacher, Russ Bosbach; Multi-Sport and coordinated by Vic Cuzzupe, a Skateboard Clinic coordinated by Kyle George, and a new clinic Boys Volleyball, directed by Jane Bergin, LHS teacher and Varsity Boys Volleyball coach.  A new clinic for 2014 is the P.E. and Activity Program directed by LPS teacher, Josh Sideman. Among our many privately run clinics for children are weekly offerings by Thundercat Sports Camps, Challenger British Soccer, Elite Soccer, Archery USA, Viking Sports Camps, the Lexington Blue Sox, Hoop Mountain Girls Developmental Basketball, Wicked Cool For Kids, Bricks 4 Kidz, and the ever popular chess classes, clinics and annual chess tournament led by Jim Della Selva.

SWIMMING

The Irving H Mabee Town Pool Complex and Old Reservoir Aquatics facilities open for the season on Saturday, May 31.    Normal operating hours for the Old Res, located on Marrett Road, are 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days per week.  The Irving H. Mabee Town Pool Complex, located on Worthen Road at the Center Recreation Complex, is also open seven days per week.  On weekdays a variety of programs including Red Cross Swim Lessons, Adult Water Aerobics, and swim team share pool space in the four individual pools, but generally the public swim hours are 10:15 – 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 – 8:45 p.m.  The Wading Pool hours are 12:00 – 4:30 and 6:00 – 8:45 p.m.

Lexington Residents may purchase seasonal swim tags at the at the Recreation Office through May 30 during regular business hours, and at the Tennis Booth, which is located in the Town Pool building, Monday – Friday,  4:30 – 7:30 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Residents not wishing to purchase swim tags may pay on a daily basis of $5.00. 

Red Cross Swimming Lessons are held throughout the summer in two-week sessions.  Registration is accepted online throughout the summer for swimming lessons.  Mail-in registration will be accepted through May 30th.  In-person swim lesson registration will be held at the Tennis Booth on July 3 and 18, and August 1from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.  Participants must have a swim tag in order to register for lessons.

 

TENNIS

Tennis lessons and clinics for children ages 4 and older are available throughout the summer at the Gallagher Tennis Courts at the Center Recreation Complex.  Lessons run weekly June 30 through August 14, Monday through Thursday mornings with a Friday rain date.  The Afternoon Youth Clinics runs 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. June 30 through August 14.  Summer and Fall Adult beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate lessons run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings plus Saturday mornings.
