An 145 Pound Weight Loss Success from Mount Auburn Hospital

Eddie Santana just over a year ago underwent a successful Gastric Bypass Surgery through Mount Auburn Hospital’s Weight Management Center and since his surgery last Spring, Eddie has lost 145 pounds, now down to 175 pounds from 325.

"No matter how hard I tried to get the weight off, I would never drop more than a couple pounds; it would always creep back on," says Eddie. "Finally my primary care doctor said I had to do something about it and recommended I meet with a team of doctors at the Center, including bariatric surgeon Dr. Julie Kim, and together with this team, decided that Gastric Bypass Surgery was the best option.

"My greatest motivation for weight loss is my health. My body was falling apart, and I really didn't want to add another medication to the list," says Eddie. " I'm back to living the life I wanted, and I feel like there isn't anything I can't do," he says. And he’s kept the weight off and continues to attend weekly support groups at the Weight Management Center and has become a mentor to others in the groups.

What makes Mount Auburn Hospital’s Weight Management Center so unique is that the staff at the center remain in constant contact with their patients, and not just through their surgeries, but for the rest of their lives, it is a thorough program with outstanding follow-up, which is something Eddie credits his continued success to. And in addition to a team committed to the best possible communication with their patients, all follow-up sessions are free of cost.

“Eddie is an example of many Weight Management Center Surgical patients who are just as successful.  He has lost significant weight and reclaimed his health. And he has taken the additional steps after surgery to become both physically active and strong… something extremely important that not all weight-loss patients do,” said Dr. Kim. “The new Weight Management facility at Waltham was built with the needs of bariatric patients in mind. We deal with patient’s real life struggles and follow them for life to help them with their struggles when food is not a source of comfort.”
