Lexington Man Committed to Alzheimer Cause

Eric Steinkrauss of Lexington will be joining the movement to end Alzheimer’s disease at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s taking place in Cambridge on Sunday September 29. Steinkrauss will walk in memory of his mother, Donna Steinkrauss.

“I was like most people, I really didn’t know too much about Alzheimer’s until my mother was diagnosed seven years ago,” said Steinkrauss. “The Walk is mainly about getting the word out to people about Alzheimer’s disease and giving it exposure.”

This year marks Steinkrauss’ fifth year participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on his team, “Nina’s Clan,” named in honor of his late mother’s nickname. Donna Steinkrauss was a popular Lexington area realtor before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Although she passed away in January her presence is still felt throughout her hometown, “To this day my kids run into people who remember and ask about my mother, it really is a testament to how kind she was and what a remarkable impact she had on people,” said Steinkrauss. The owner of Metro Contracting Company and longtime baseball coach, Steinkrauss and his team fundraise wherever they can. “Our agenda is to get people aware of Alzheimer’s disease and how bad it really is,” said Steinkrauss. “We hope the money and the exposure that we’re creating will help research a means to combat this awful disease.”

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.  As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. The disease has a significant impact on family members, with nearly 15 million providing care to a loved one, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
