With showers and thunderstorms rolling through the area, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Lexington that will remain in place until late Tuesday afternoon.

Rainfall rates in the heaviest showers and storms could exceed two inches per hour.

Showers and thunderstorms will result in pockets of heavy rainfall and the potential for localized flash flooding on Tuesday.
"Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low-lying spots," the Service says, noting country roads and farmland are at-risk as well.

While the warning expires at 3:15 p.m., a flash flood watch is in effect until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service, residents should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flooding occur.

The threat for heavy rainfall will wane significantly by early evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Here in Lexington, there is a high chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and some of the storms could produce heavy rain.
