LexMedia and RCN Launch HD Channel

RCN customers can now get the 'Best of' their local cable access programming in high definition.

LexMedia and RCN have announced the launch of a high definition (HD) public access channel, the first one for a privately-owned cable television system in the state.

The new HD channel, #613 for RCN customers, will be like a “Best of LexMedia” channel, according to Executive Director Florence DelSanto.

Channel 613 will feature selected studio-produced shows, event and sports coverage, DelSanto said.

So, while on-location of Lexington’s 300th festivities and new favorites like “Ask Dog Lady” will air on 613, don’t expect to see the selectmen in HD. Meeting coverage, which is often captured on built-in cameras, is not shot in high definition.

In a press release announcing the channel’s launch, RCN Boston VP and General Manager Jeff Carlson said LexMedia was an easy choice for the cable provider’s first public access channel in HD.

“RCN’s technology is second to none and we want to share it with our customers,” said Carlson. “The decision to launch an HD channel for public access in Lexington was an easy one because of LexMedia’s award winning operation and its dedication to delivering the highest quality programming to its viewers.”

For its part, LexMedia is more than happy to have a fourth channel.

“Obviously, we are thrilled to be able to provide our viewers with high definition programming,” said David Ilsley, LexMedia's Board Chairman, in the press release. “We applaud RCN's commitment to providing its customers with the highest caliber of new HD options and content.”

In addition to the new HD channel #613, LexMedia’s public, education and government programming will continue to be seen on RCN’s channels #3, #13 and #15.
