Lexington's 300th Opening Activities, Art and Opera in Conord

1. Lexington 300th All-Town Picnic & Country Fair
Where/When: Hastings Park, Mass Ave & Worthen Rd, Lexington; 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22
Why Go:  Lexington’s Country Fair will highlight the past, present and future with activities that range from old-fashioned colonial field games to more modern contests. A raffle table is in the works with original creations by Lexingtonians. Quilted works, handcrafted pillows, and accessories will be available.

2. 12th Biennial Art-a-Blooming in Lexington
Where/When: Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, 130 Waltham St, Lexington; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23
Why Go: Under the collaborative leadership of Shirley King of LACS and of Harriet Hathaway and Kate Gill of LFGC, we have our own local version of Art-in-Bloom.  Visitors will view 34 unique floral interpretations arranged by Lexington Field & Garden Club designers of a variety of beautiful works of art created by Lexington Arts & Crafts Society members.

3. Celestial City
Where/When: Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts, 40 Stow St, Concord; 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22 and 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23
Why Go: It's New Life Fine Arts Musical Theater’s original adaptation of the classic story, “Celestial City: The Story of John Bunyan and His ‘Pilgrim’s Progress." This musical retelling of Bunyan’s work and life is written and directed by Concord composer David MacAdam and features 37 actors, singers and dancers ready to take you on the journey of a lifetime.

4. Opera on a Sunday Afternoon
Where/When: Concord Orchestra, 51 Walden St, Concord; 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23
Why Go: Alan Yost conducts members and friends of the Concord Orchestra in a benefit concert, “Opera on a Sunday Afternoon.” The program features soloists from last spring’s performance of La Bohème by the Friends of the Performing Arts in Concord.
Pricing: $30 for adults, $10 for students

5. Lexington Symphony Season Opener
Where/When: Cary Memorial Building, 1605 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington; 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23
Why Go: Lexington Symphony’s season opens with a program in honor of Lexington’s 300th anniversary. Talented young composer Sky Macklay has written a piece in honor of this anniversary:Dissolving Bands. In addition, the symphony will perform two exciting works of music dedicated to the love of place and of the city; Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon‘s City Scape and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ impressionistic “London” symphony.
