Shpilkes Klezmer Band to Rock Munroe Saturday Nights Stage

The Shpilkes Klezmer Band, well known in the greater Boston area for their joyful sounds and their slogan, Don't Sit Still, will take to the stage at Lexington's Munroe Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 10.

The energy, joy and celebration that is Klezmer music will be featured at the next Munroe Saturday Nights presentation, on Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m.

The Shpilkes Klezmer Band, well known in the greater Boston area for their joyful sounds and their slogan, Don’t Sit Still, will take to the stage at Munroe, presenting an evening of traditional and contemporary Klezmer music.

The concert, which will be presented at the in Lexington, is part of a Munroe Saturday Nights season that has featured staged readings of one-act plays, Victorian Operetta, performance art, poetry, and more. All Munroe Saturday Nights programs are free, with donations gratefully accepted.

Klezmer is the traditional folk music of the Yiddish speaking communities of Eastern Europe and America during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Shpilkes Klezmer Band was formed from players from the western suburbs of Boston in 2000.  The group became the congregational Klezmer band at Temple Aliyah in Needham, and has become a mainstay of the Purim celebrations and congregational events at various synagogues.

Shpilkes performers are Pam Furey: drums, Barbara Green: vocals, Arnie Harris: vocals, guitar, trombone; Fred Ledley: clarinet, alto clarinet; Jim Mavor: accordion, Alan Posner: trumpet, Dick Schoeller: bass, guitar, vocals; and Susan Silverman: flute, alto saxophone, and recorder. 

Munroe Saturday Nights is a performing arts series for Lexington and the greater Boston community. Other events during the 2011-2012 season will feature an evening of vocal music by talented female singers and a staged reading of playwright Merrill Meadow’s original drama, “Purple Hearts.” Seating for Munroe Saturday Nights performances is limited and reservations are strongly encouraged. Parking is available in the lot at the rear of the building or on the street.
