Why Go: TEDx Walden Pond's inaugural event kicks off with featured speakers and entertainers David Ropeik, Polly Peterson, Siri Smedvig, Jonathan and Katharine Glass, Prema Bhakti Band, Adele Fleet Bacow, Dr. Deborah Diamond, Jackie Woodside, Jillian Vorce, Drew Scott Pearlman and Anna Huckabee Tull.

2. Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography
Where/When: National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington; 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14
Why Go: Featuring 60 color photographs, “Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography” is a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Grand Canyon Association. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum from October 13, 2012 through January 5, 2013, and will continue on a national tour through the remainder of the year.

3. Rising Star Quilt Guild Annual Show
Where/When: Cary Memorial Building, 1605 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14
Why Go: It's the Rising Star Quilt Guild's 125th annual show, featuring nearly 150 traditional, contemporary and challenge quilts. This year the raffle quilt is a 2-sided quilt called Double the Fun. The theme for the challenge quilts is A Splash of Silver. In addition there will be a boutique selling hand-crafted items made by members, a daily mini-quilt and basket raffle and a bake table located on the building’s main floor.

4. Poetry Returns to Lexington’s Munroe Saturday Nights
Where/When: Munroe Center for the Arts, 1403 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington; 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13
Why Go: Five of the metrowest’s best poets, including two from Lexington, will be featured in the next installment of Munroe Saturday Nights. Featured poets include Lexington's Cammy Thomas, and Ros Zimmermann, along with Geoffrey Movius, Julia Lisella and Theodora Stratis.

5. 32nd Annual CROP Walk for the Hungry
Where/When: First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord; 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14
Why Go: CROP Walk supports Acton Community Supper and Food Pantry, Mt. Calvary Community Supper, Bedford Community Table/Pantry, Open Table Concord, Open Table Maynard, Maynard Food Pantry, Sudbury Community Food Pantry, Gaining Ground, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, and Townsend Ecumenical Outreach. The CCHS band will play at the start of the walk, and the Yankee Stompers Dixieland Jazz Band at the finish.
