Back to School Reality

Depending on how you look at it it’s either the most wonderful time of the year or a teary eyed milestone. For me it is both. My kids love school and I love time to write in a quiet house but these years are passing so quickly that it does bring a tear to my eye to watch them go off without a pause.

I watched as the Facebook posts of my friends kids appeared across my page this morning and I noticed a similar theme to all of them. Parents were amazed at their children’s calm, stoic demeanor. I didn’t hear of any morning routine disasters, no first day classroom confusion or crying as Mom and Dad said goodbye. Just a lot of proud parents hiding our anxiety and tears from our little ones.

As I walked backwards toward my car watching my kids walk into their classrooms I ran into fellow parents with their camera’s and tissues. We were all in the same boat this back to school morning. Sure we were all running off to work of some sort but paused even after the bus pick up or classroom drop off to remember this morning. For me it was the first day of Kindergarten for my little man. Yes, I had been through this before with my daughter but somehow this was different. My baby was out in the world now. I felt like my own heart was with him taking it all in, feeling nervous, excited, missing home...or not.

We put so much into our children for better or worse that when back to school comes, no matter if it is the first day of Kindergarten, middle school or college we feel like a part of our selves is out there too. Living through our kids as they make new friends, tackle new challenges and encounter new emotions.

But aside from that...the sun came up as it always does and little kids went off to school as they always do and life went on with a few more children ready to take on the world.
