How To: Keep Safe and Cool During the Heat Wave in Lexington

Due to heat, the town pool complex announces extended hours.

Lexington residents will have more options for beating the heat this evening.

The town announced today that the Town Pool Complex would be open until 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19 due to the heat. The announcement comes several days into a heat wave that could last through Saturday.

On these two nights, according to the town website, there will be public swim from 6 to 9:45 p.m. in the wading pool, from 7 to 9:45 p.m. in the Garrity and dive pools and 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. in the lap pool.

According to the National Weather Service, highs could get into the 90s today, tomorrow and Saturday, too. The combination of continued extreme heat and no precipitation can cause health hazards.

Lexington's Public Health Division provided the following tips:

  • Drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor and out of the sun. Seek additional relief in air-conditioned libraries, theaters, and other community facilities.
  • Eat light, well-balanced meals and limit the use of your stove and oven.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors, especially those who live alone or those who may not have air conditioning.
