Lexington Pharmaceutical Company Makes Big Purchase

Cubist spent $1.6 billion to acquire two companies.

Lexington’s Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. has laid out big bucks to purchase to companies.

The company, known for its antibiotic Cubicin bought Optimer Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Trius Theraputics Inc. for a combined $1.6 billion, according to a story in the Boston Globe.

The company hopes to generate as much as $1 billion annually from the deal.

Cubist gains an experimental drug to treat skin infections being developed by Trius, which the company seeks to launch in 2014, according to a report by Reuters.

By purchasing Optimer, the company gains an antibacterial drug Dificid used to treat infectious diarrhea, Reuters reported.
