Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 2

What's open and closed, important dates this week and more today in Lexington.

1. What's Closed: Today is a town holiday, and town offices will be closed in observance of New Year's Day, which fell on Sunday. The schools, and assorted offices and businesses around town are closed today, as well.

2. What's Open: Though much of the town shuts down, emergency services will be operational and many retailers and restaurants will open up. So you can still grab a bit at places like and or catch a movie at , where the new "Sherlock Holmes" flick is showing at 12:30, 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. and "the Descendants" is 1, 3:45 and 6:45 p.m.

3. Today in High School Sports: Lexington High's boys and girls varsity indoor track teams head to Arlington High School for a 4 p.m. meet.

4. A Few Important Dates: Wednesday, Jan. 4, is voter registration deadline for the Jan. 24 special election/debt exclusion vote, with questions on renovations to the Bridge and Bowman elementary schools and rebuilding Estabrook Elementary. 5. Maybe More Wind and Rain: A slight chance of afternoon showers on an otherwise sunny, windy day with highs of 43 and potential for wind gusts of up to 32 mph, according to the National Weather Service, which predicts a slight chance of snow showers overnight as clouds roll in and temps drop down in the low 20s.
