Lexington Home of the Week: 353 Concord Ave.

Free-Standing Condominium with Privacy

When real estate developer Joseph Underwood was designing plans for Minuteman Village condominiums in the 1970's, zoning guidelines threatened to thwart the project when the complex needed frontage on Concord Ave. His solution? His personal residence, a federal-style antique colonial, became part of the association and was converted a free-standing condominium residence with all the collective benefits of a home maintenance alliance.

This 222 year-old farmhouse offers 2,200 square feet of charming living space within three floors. The first level consists of four of the home's eight rooms, with 16 x 14 square foot fireplaced living and dining rooms, a 16 x 14 square foot eat-in kitchen and a spacious 20 x 15 square foot family room with a warming pellet stove within a stone fireplace. There is also a half bath and oversize laundry room on this level.

The second floor boasts fireplaces in the master and second bedroom, and includes two additional bedrooms and a full bath. The third floor, though unheated, expands the living area of the home with a 33 x 10 square foot playroom and 19 x 10 square foot bonus room.

This home offers many period details throughout, including a possible beehive oven and fireplace that a previous owner claims is hidden behind a kitchen wall patiently waiting for occupants that will appreciate its vintage character. New owners who value charm will find this property hard to resist, but will also be pleasantly surprised when they realize it has also received many structural updates and conveniences, such as a new furnace and driveway.

The Joseph Underwood House, as it is well known throughout Lexington, majestically rests on its corner lot behind a stone wall and finely manicured landscape for all of town to admire. Although over 200 centuries old, it has received many renovations to comply with current designs and lifestyles, but more importantly, it represents a unique piece of Lexington history through its age, structural design and interior features that never go out of style.
