A Lexington Tribute to Doc Fiveash—an Evening of Truth and Beauty











On Friday, January 3, 2014, a group of former students, colleagues and friends of Dr. Michael Fiveash will host a memorial celebration of his life, A Lexington Tribute to Doc Five - an Evening of Truth and Beauty, at Cary Hall, 1605 Mass. Ave, Lexington.  The event will be free and open to the public, with a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m., and the program to start at 7:30 p.m.

The evening will feature musical performances, recitations and readings that would make Doc laugh and cry.  Enjoy musical performances from Amanda Palmer, Joe Musacchia, Josiah Reibstein, Benjamin Ruesch, Katie Lyon-Pingree, Dan Rodriguez and Laura Lapoint, a dance performance by Ryan Casey, as well as a performance of the song “Apologies to Catullus” (Poem of Catullus translated and adapted by Bryan Williams (LHS'91) set to music by John Kramer and sung for many years by seniors at LHS graduation.  The event will also include a video compilation of former students telling their stories of how they were inspired by Doc Five's classes, a recorded violin performance of Sibelius by Hao-Kai Pai, and Erik Silva's "Doc-Umentary". In addition, there will be a recitation of "Ithaka" in Greek by Eleni Sacre, the Gilgamesh story by Rick Reibstein, "Ulysses" by Peter Meek, and presentations of a Class of 1979 Tribute to O Magister by John Conceison and "A Psalm of Five Ashes", a poem based on the Latin vulgate text of the popular 23rd Psalm, by Trevor Uhl. And please share your own thoughts and memories of Doc Five on the tribute wall at the event.

In addition to the event, an annual scholarship fund has been established for the benefit of a graduating LHS student who has excelled in the classics, and an annual teaching award has been established honoring a LHS teacher who exhibits Michael's love and knowledge of the subject, innovative ways of teaching and deep caring for his students and colleagues.  All proceeds from the sale of DVDs, t-shirts and mugs will go to support the scholarship and the teaching award.
