The Woodworker’s Guild of the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society is pleased to announce that renowned furniture maker Kim Schmahmann will speak at their monthly meeting on November 14, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.  The event is open to the public.  About Mr. Schmahmann, Bobbi Tornheim, chair of the Woodworker’s Guild says, “His work is jawdropping.  He’s much more than just a furniture maker”. 


Mr.
Schmahmann, a resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was educated at the North Bennett Street School in Boston.  His designs Lexington are intellectually driven, contain extraordinary detail, and take years to complete.  Mr. Schmahmann describes his unique design style, “I use the language of furniture to highlight how everyday documents affect our lives. Specifically, by embedding a variety of doccuments — both personal and institutional — in each piece, I explore the various ways in which these documents shape how we live and work”.


His
works are part of a number of permanent collections, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.


The
Woodworkers Guild will hold an open house at their workshop at 130 Waltham Street in Lexington from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in advance of the talk.  The Woodworker’s Guild is an open guild whose members share ideas and techniques and can practice their art in the well-equipped shop at the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society building.   Membership is available to those who have some experience in woodworking and an interest in actively participating in the Guild.
