In 1889, the year of the unveiling of the Eiffel Tower, vendors at the World's Fair in Paris began selling postcards showing, for the first time, a photographic view of the Tower. During this World's Fair 300,000 postcards showing different views of the Eiffel Tower were sold; a success starting the Golden Age of the postcard not only in France but also in the world. Picture postcards from the Belle Epoque have become a valuable art form offering a fascinating glimpse into everyday life at the end of the nineteenth century and up to World War I and beyond.
Historian and connoisseur of vintage French postcards, Xavier Donat, has been collecting these historic relics for nearly twenty years, and now wants to share the many secrets that the postcard world has to bring from an historic, as well as artistic, point of view.
The cost of this evening's event is $10.
