Metropolitan Wind Symphony Band Concert: Earlier Times

Nearly all the major works on this program in one way or another
look back to or are derived from earlier times in American or world history.
They represent the Wild West, early 20th Century Iowa,
the Gothic literary tradition, an ancient Latin text, and a children's march from
a more innocent time. We will also welcome world-class trumpet soloist James
Ackley to our stage. And we will premiere a thematic piece we commissioned from
student composer Joseph Kaz entitled Fall of the House of Usher.

Featured will be Fall of the House of Usher by Joseph Kaz – a World Premiere by the 2011 MWS Student Composer Competition Co-Winner, Sonata for Trumpet by Kent Kennan, with James Ackley soloing on trumpet, The Music Man by Meredith Willson and arranged by Lewis Buckley, Children’s March by Percy Grainger, Sasparilla by John Mackey, King Cotton March by John Philip Sousa, and Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre. Mr. Buckley will deliver a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 pm.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for seniors, $6 for students, and are free for children under 5. They are available at the door or can be reserved by telephone. Call the MWS Concert Line at (617) 983-1370 to reserve or purchase tickets. Visit the MWS web page at http://www.mws-boston.org for information and directions. Email mws@mws-boston.org with any
