LHS Golfer to Lead ‘Boston Strong Golf-a-Thon’

Stone Meadows in Lexington is donating its Par 3 course and driving range for the fundraiser.

Local golfers will be yelling “fore” for a good cause on Aug. 19, when Stone Meadows hosts a “Boston Strong Golf-a-Thon” organized by Luke Dion, a rising senior Lexington High.

A fundraiser for the One Fund Boston, the golf-a-thon will invite participants to play 9 on the Par 3 course, hit a bucket at the driving range, buy raffle tickets and participate in a silent auction – the top prize being a Bruins jersey signed by the team.

Stone Meadows is donating its 9-hole course and driving range for the fundraiser. So when golfers stop $20 to play the Par 3 or $8 on a medium bucket of balls, all the dough is going to the One Fund, which assists victims and families affected by the Boston Marathon bombing.

Dion, a member of the golf team at LHS, said the tragic events of April 15 were still weighing on his mind when he was thinking of things to do over the summer. The idea of a fundraiser involving golf came up during a conversation with his mother and sister, and the Boston Strong Golf-a-Thon evolved from there.

“Because of what had happened with the marathon bombings, I thought it would be a good way to get the whole community involved in supporting the One Fund,” said Dion.

In addition to Stone Meadows, other local businesses have pitched in by sponsoring holes along the Par 3 and putting up Dion’s flyers. Friends and family have volunteered to help out during the event, and a few dozen folks have already confirmed attendance on the Facebook event, Dion said.

“I think it surprised me the reactions that I got from people,” he said. “Originally planning it, I thought it would be a small-scale thing, but going along I was talking to friends and neighbors and my family, and they were on board with it – asking when it was going to be and if they could help.”

For Stone Meadows, donating the course was an easy choice when Dion went to them asking about the Boston Strong Golf-a-Thon.

“I think it’s such a good local event,” said Steve Corr, the general manager. “We definitely wanted to help.”
