Five Things To Do With The Kids Over Vacation

1. Catch a movie at : The latest Sherlock Homes flick is playing at 12:30, 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. during the week at the theatre at 1794 Mass Ave.  Rated PG-13, “A Game of Shadows” might be a little intense for younger kids, but should appeal to boys of a certain age who have a little extra free time on their hands. For younger kids, Tin Tin, the Chipmunks and the Muppets movies are all playing at the nearby AMC Burlington Cinemas.

2. See a T. Rex or Experience Alaska at the MOS: Among the attractions this week at the Museum of Science are live animal presentations, “Alaska: Spirit of the Wild” on the IMAX and “Waking the T. Rex: The Story of Sue” in the 30D Digital Cinema.

3. Keep it local at : All sorts of programs this week at the library. Though it’s closed today, you can look forward to from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, family crafts from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

4. Come alive with the “Sound of Music:” A Christmas tradition, the returns to Arlington’s . Wear a wimple and warm up the old vocalizer for an afternoon or evening of singing along with assorted nuns, Von Trapp family members and Julie Andrews wannabes. Costumes are not required, but they are encouraged and prizes are awarded in the fancy dress competition.  Tickets are $12 for kids and seniors and $15 for adults. Performances are tonight at 7 p.m., 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, 7 p.m. on Thursday and 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday.

5. Head west for Discovery: An easy ride down Route 2 west, the Discovery Museums in Acton offer plenty of interesting programs, events and exhibits to keep the kids busy for a few hours. While both buildings are closed today, among the programs offered this week is a Kwanzaa celebration at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec 27 which includes a storytelling of “My First Kwanzaa” and making of Kwanzaa noodle necklaces. Admission is $10.50 for children and adults.
