Pack for a Move Like a Professional

Lexington realtor Kristin Brown-Orr shares tips on how to pack like a professional and streamline the moving process.

Even if you’re moving to your dream home, packing up your belongings is usually a daunting task. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and completely stressed out if you don’t have a process and remain organized.

Here are a few tips to set you up for more success and less stress.

1.) Make a packing supply list, and use recycled boxes when possible. You’ll need packing and sealing tape, packing paper (old news paper works great), bubble wrap, labels, and plenty of markers.

2.) Get rid of unwanted items. There is no sense in packing and moving items that you no longer need or want. Before you start packing up your house, it’s important to do a thorough cleanse of all unwanted items that will clog up your move. By donating clothes and lightly used household goods to local non-profits, you can not only help the less fortunate in your community but yourself as well. With the proper documentation, you can write off your donations the next time you file your taxes.

3.) Pack a “must-have” box. This box should contain what you will need in the last few days of your old home, like toiletries and other daily essentials that you will also need when you first move to your new place.

4.) Properly label boxes. This might seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people move without properly labeling boxes. You should clearly write to which room the box should be sent on the side of each box; you may also want to include the contents. Labels on the top of the box are often hidden by stacking boxes. Don’t forget to include “Fragile” or “This end up” when necessary.

5.) Don’t be forgetful. Have you picked up all of your belongings from local tailors, cleaners and cobblers? If you have to change doctors, dentists or your kids are changing schools, then you need to make sure to gather your records to bring with you. Tie up gym and other club memberships, along with library cards. Don’t forget to take your spare keys out of hiding and pass them along to the new owner.

By following the above steps you should be able to pack up your home in a relatively seamless process. For the organizationally challenged, there are plenty of detailed checklists available online to make sure you stay on your game.
