Make That Summertime Sale

What makes selling your house in the summertime special?

First of all, summer is beautiful. Homes show well in the summer, when lawns and landscaping are at their best. It’s a great time to make your home look inviting – a haven in which to relax in the season that calls out for relaxation. Your house could be just the oasis that a busy, hardworking homebuyer is looking for.

There are a few important things to remember when selling your house in the summer, starting with making your curb appeal stand out from all of the other homes on the market – and this means a diligent approach to keeping your yard looking its best. Mow the lawn twice a week (even if you don’t think you need to) so that the grass looks picture-perfect. Make sure to bag those clippings, too. Even if you don’t usually water your lawn, break out the sprinkler if the weather gets dry or hot. Be sure to abide by outdoor watering schedules in your town. It might seem like a splurge, but brown grass tends to look neglected.

If you have a pool, keep it clean and inviting and keep the patio area free of pool paraphernalia. Stow outdoor equipment in the garage or a shed, and make sure kids’ bikes, scooter, and toys are put away when they finish playing outdoors each day.

Make sure to add some outdoor color with plants and flowers, and echo this effect indoors with splashes of summer color around the house. Change up your throw pillows, bath and kitchen towels, and even throw rugs to reflect the colors of the season. Think lighter and brighter.

Use summer’s long days and bright light to your advantage to show off your home. Brighten the inside of your house by opening curtains and windows and keeping windows sparkling clean. Make sure your indoor temperature is controlled and comfortable. Use fans to keep air flowing throughout the house. Since warmer weather can mean that trash, basements, and even pets smell unpleasant, stay on top of potential hot spots and be sure to eliminate odors immediately.

You might also consider moving some of your living space outdoors. Not only is outdoor living space a hot trend right now, but you can actually create the illusion of more total living space by bringing the indoors outside. Invest in some nice outdoor furniture and a grill and arrange them in an inviting manner as you would a room in your house Beautify your patio or deck with brightly-colored flowers in planters. And think about putting up a hammock, adding a fountain, or planting pots of herbs or vegetables to make your outdoor living space memorable.

Summertime is a great opportunity to make your home stand out in the real estate market. Take advantage of the nice weather to show off your home and yard at their finest, and the buyers are sure to come by for a closer look.
