UPDATED: Looking Forward to Veterans Day in Lexington

As the rain falls on this dark and dreary Thursday afternoon, many folks are looking ahead to a three day weekend, it’s important to also look back and appreciate why schools, municipal offices and many businesses shut down on the “eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

This Friday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day, a national holiday meant to honor America’s veterans for, among other things, their service and sacrifices for this country.

Here in Lexington, town offices and schools are closed, services like trash and recycling collection are delayed and Lexpress, the local public transportation, does not operate.

And there’s also the annual Veterans Day Parade and Ceremonies.

Unfortunately, the Public Celebrations Committee's voicemail box announced this afternoon that the parade has been cancelled, but the ceremonies are still on for 10 a.m. at .

Normally, the parade marches Mass Ave, from the to the , stopping along the way to lay wreaths at monuments at the and . Ceremonies on the Battle Green include a flag raising, wreath laying and the year’s Veterans Day Essay Contest winners. Expect many of those same ceremonial activities to go on inside Cary Hall.

At 12 p.m. over at the Depot, the Historical Society is hosting a free, family-oriented “” program honoring the town’s Civil War veterans. Re-enactors are included.
