Photo of the Day: Kids Cooking Green Go To Market

This photo was provided by Kids Cooking Green.

Kids who attended a recent free Kids Cooking Green workshop at the Lexington Farmers’ Market got a taste of summer and a lot of great information about fun and healthy eating. Dietician Joy McCallum, who specializes in pediatric nutrition, talked with kids about eating a rainbow of colorful foods.  The kids learned  that peppers alone, grow in colors from red, orange, yellow to green, and offer a burst of color and flavor on their plate.

Joy McCallum then took them on a scavenger hunt for turnips, peas and beans throughout the Market. Some kids had never even seen a turnip before! Kids also got a chance to talk to farmers about raising food locally and bringing it to a farmers’ market. Kids then mixed together a local fresh fruit smoothie with using strawberry-rhubarb puree (they got the recipe to take home) and yogurt from a local farm. Powered by a solar-battery awarded to the Lexington Farmers’ Market a few years ago, the blenders yielded smoothies that were a tasty end to a fun event.

Each child received a $2 coupon to the Lexington Farmers’ Market, and a complimentary copy of ChopChop, a local magazine dedicated to making healthy eating a delicious adventure for kids.
