Independent vs. Private: What's the Difference?

When it comes to schools, the terms “private” and “independent” are often used interchangeably, but should they be? There are similarities and differences for both, and it is certainly important to know the distinction when considering the best type of school for your child.

Both private and independent schools are, predictably, non-public schools – that is to say, they are funded by their own resources, not through tax dollars. Within the realm of private schools, there exist a number of subcategories:

Parochial Schools: These are schools linked directly to a Catholic diocese. In some situations, they can offer lower tuition for members of the diocese.

Other Religious Schools: These are schools affiliated with other religious organizations and institutions.  These schools’ religious backgrounds range from Episcopalian to Jewish, and much more.

Independent Schools: These are schools run by a group of trustees or governors. The main point of differentiation is that the leadership board is truly independent of another organization.  It cannot be governed by any outside entity, including non-profit organizations, churches or for-profit corporations. Therefore, independent schools have stricter rules for governance within the private school world.

In the United States, many schools have begun using the “independent” label to escape the stereotypes associated with private education. Additionally, many feel that the term helps them come across as being more diverse, nurturing and supportive, while focusing less on the competitiveness and selectiveness of the admissions process or tuition costs.

There is still much variation between schools in both the private and independent categories, and many families find it useful to ask questions of school representatives when determining the best fit for their child’s needs. Families can meet with school representatives at Private School Innovator’s free Private School Forum at the Sheraton in Needham, Mass. on Sunday, September 29th from 1-3 p.m. The Forum will bring together more than 60 leading schools and feature an admissions panel discussion and Q&A session, an exhibition where students and parents can engage directly with admissions representatives, and a keynote speech from Dr. David Shim, a clinical psychologist and prominent Boston University professor. Registration is free on the website.

The differences between private and independent schools are subtle, but with a little research, your family can decide which institution is the right fit for your child and put him or her on the path to success. Best of luck in your search!
