Activists Against Massport Hanscom Expansion Endorse Barrett

Barrett is endorsed by activists against the expansion of Massport Hanscom civilian airport.

State Senate candidate Mike Barrett's environmental activism has drawn the endorsement of a group of Bedford, Concord, Lexington, and Lincoln residents who lead local efforts to oppose expansion of Massport’s Hanscom civilian airport.

Group members include Lori Eggert and Ron Green of Bedford; Leslie Fisher, Michael Henchman and Sarah Lazarus of Concord; Kay Tiffany, Margaret Coppe, Stew Kennedy and Andy Friedlich of Lexington; and Jim Henderson and Jim Hutchinson of Lincoln.

Massport, the writers contend, has repeatedly tried to bring ticketed passenger service, cargo operations and expanded infrastructure into Hanscom, threatening the balance between commerce and the serenity of historic places. The group believes only strong community efforts can limit inappropriate expansion.

“Our State Senator represents us in meetings with government officials,” group members say in a statement, “and Mike Barrett’s the only candidate who really understands the issues around Massport’s Hanscom Field.”

Signers of the statement argue that Barrett’s expertise in environmental policy can aid the entire state.

"In his prior service he won awards for outstanding contributions to shaping environmental laws," signers write. "Mike authored two landmark laws, to reduce toxics in the land and water and to create a hazardous waste cleanup fund.”
