Former Environmental Secretary Backs Barrett
Former Environmental Secretary of Affairs James Hoyte Endorses Barrett
Capping several weeks of endorsements by leaders of local climate change and open space groups, James Hoyte, former Secretary of Environmental Affairs under Gov. Mike Dukakis, has endorsed Mike Barrett for State Senator.
“We have the chance to do more than elect someone who will cast a good vote,” Hoyte says. “We have the chance to elect a true environmental champion to the State Senate.”
Barrett recently announced the support of Bedford, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln residents active in opposing expansion at Massport’s Hanscom Airport. He’s also been endorsed by Bedford’s Roger and Susan Shamel, founders of the Global Warming Education Network; Lincoln’s Peter Von Mertens, co-chair of the Conservation Commission; and Lexington’s Peggy Enders, Principal, Friends of Lexington Bikeways.

When Barrett was State Senator from Cambridge, he was lead sponsor of a landmark Toxic Use Reduction Act. Even earlier, in the Mass. House of Representatives, he founded the body’s first Environmental Caucus and rescued the state’s Hazardous Waste Clean-up legislation, which had been weakened by amendments from industry lobbyists.
“Mike has the proven ability to get things done in the Senate from the minute he walks up the State House steps,” Hoyte said in a statement.
