Letter to the Editor: Mike Barrett Thanks Supporters

Mike Barrett, candidate for State Senate in the 3rd Middlesex District, Massachusetts, thanks supporters after winning the primary on September 6th.

To the Editor:

My family and I send out our deepest appreciation to the two groups responsible for my winning the local Democratic primary for State Senate: the friends and neighbors who helped us out, and the voters who heard from an outstanding field and decided to vote for me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to both.

As shown by the modest margin of victory (374 votes out of 14,680 cast), every individual effort mattered – lawn signs, Dear Friend cards, sign-holding at debates, sign-holding on election day, grassroots contributions, word-of-mouth support, careful consideration of the candidates. Democracy worked the way it was designed to work. We should treasure such moments.

To keep the grassroots spirit alive in the final, my honorable Republican opponent and I should debate often. So far, League of Women Voter chapters in Concord-Carlisle, Sudbury and Weston have invited me to take part in open forums, as has Chelmsford Cable’s Carmen Christiano. In each case I’ve replied with an enthusiastic yes, and I look forward to hearing of more such events.

May I extend an invitation of my own, to all residents of the district, to take an interest in the November elections for all offices, from the Presidency of the United States on down. I look forward to talking to many of you in the coming six weeks and thereafter.

Michael J. Barrett
