Pioneering architect Sally Harkness died on May 22 in the Lexington home that she and her husband designed at the age of 98.

In 1945, Harkness co-founded The Architects Collaborative with seven others including Walter Gropius. The firm started at a time when architecture was considered a “man’s world,” according to a report in the Boston Globe.

She won numerous awards, including one for her career’s work from the Boston Society of Architects. She also served as director of the American Institute of Architects, New England.
