Police Investigating Safe, Cash Theft From Waltham YMCA

No arrests have been made in the case.

Waltham Police are investigating the recent theft of a safe and some cash from the YMCA in Waltham.

While no arrests have been made in the case, Waltham Police Sgt. Joseph Guigno said the Dec. 24, 2012 and Jan. 9, 2013 thefts from the YMCA remain under investigation.

YMCA staff reported the first break-in at around 7:35 a.m. on Dec. 24 when they opened the facility for the day, Guigno told Waltham Patch. Sometime overnight, at least one robber kicked in a door to the building and broke into an office which contained a safe, Guigno said. The culprit took the safe from the building. Guigno said he did not know what was in the safe.

The second robbery occurred sometime between the night of Jan. 9 and morning of Jan. 10, 2013. At around 5 a.m., YMCA employees discovered an undisclosed amount of cash had been taken from an office, Guigno said. The robber had broken into the building by smashing a window and going through a doorway, he said.

The YMCA is cooperating with police and reviewing its security procedures, YMCA Executive Director Jack Fucci said. Fucci said the safety and security of the building, its staff and members is the Y’s top priority.

“Unfortunately, these acts of vandalism occur everywhere and we were subject to that in the last two weeks," Fucci told Waltham Patch.

Because the matter is still under investigation, Fucci would not comment on whether sensitive information or records were stolen.
