Super Tuesday: Wang Wins Housing Authority Seat, Romney Romps

In the town's only contested race for elected office, Weidong Wang edged out Dan McCabe to claim a seat on the Lexington Housing Authority. Former Gov. Mitt Romney easily outpaced his competition in the Republican primary.

There was just one contested race for elected office yesterday in Lexington, but it was a close one.

According to unofficial preliminary results released last night by the Town Clerk's Office, Weidong Wang, a political newcomer in town who positioned himself as a voice for Lexington's Asian community, narrowly defeated Dan McCabe to win a five-year term on the Lexington Housing Authority.

Just 24 percent of Lexington's 21,520 registered voters turned out for the annual Town Elections, which coincided with Super Tuesday and the Massachusetts presidential primary.

Housing Authority was the only contested race for elected office and Wang earned 2,295, edging out McCabe's tally of 2,033. The difference between the two fell well short of the number of ballots left blank (771).

All of the incumbent candidates running unopposed held onto their positions, including Selectman Peter Kelley, School Committee members Mary Ann Stewart and Jessie Steigerwald, Planning Board Members Richard Canale and Gregory Zurlo and Town Moderator Deborah Brown.

And, in another bit of added intrigue loosely involving the School Committee, the board's student rep, Noah Coolidge, launched an 11th hour write-in campaign for the Board of Selectman and stole 61 votes, enough to land him in fourth place, behind Kelley (3,491), the blanks (1,490) and all others (70).

Almost half of Town Meeting precincts had contested elections, including precints 3, 4, 8 and 9. (For a full list of Town Meeting members elected Tuesday, click here or on the PDF posted above.)
