Update: Bedford Street Project Progresses

With water main installation now complete, next up is the cleaning and testing stage.

Now, the new mains must be cleaned and tested, before the project progresses to transferring area homes from the old pipe to the new one. That cleaning and testing is taking place this week, and traffic disruptions are expected to continue.

“The next effort for the project will be to transfer all the houses and businesses that are on the old pipe on Bedford Street to the new pipe. This work entails additional excavation in the street. The work will progress down the street in a pattern similar to the installation of the main. The detours that were used over the past several weeks on Bedford Street will be used again.”

As the transfers are made, residents can expect a water service disruption of about an hour as their home is transferred from the old pipe to the new.

According to the original project description, crews were working to replace unlined water main on Bedford Street from Worthen Road to the Minuteman Bikeway, a measure taken to assure the highest quality and availability of water volume.

The road has remained open to local traffic, but narrows to one lane with traffic alternating directions in work areas. Though efforts have been made to minimize traffic disruptions, commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible.

If plans remain consistent with the initial phase of the project, work areas are expected to progress westward from Worthen Road to the Minuteman Bikeway, and work hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
