Cary Memorial Library Presents Martha Ackmann, Author of Curveball: the Remarkable Story of Toni Stone

Cary Memorial Library invites you to meet  Martha Ackmann, author of Curveball: The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone.

Toni Stone was the first woman to play professional baseball. Since women’s leagues of the 1940's and 50's refused her eligibility due to the color of her skin, Stone ended up playing alongside men in the Negro League.  In this program, author Martha Ackmann will discuss the racism and sexism that Stone endured and will chronicle Stone's struggles and victories, revealing how far passion, pride, and determination can take one person in pursuit of their dream.

Martha Ackmann is a journalist, author, and editor who writes about women who have changed America. A much sought after public speaker, she has spoken at libraries, colleges and universities across America. In addition to writing and public speaking, Dr. Ackmann is also a member of the faculty at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley,Massachusetts.
