German's On the Agenda for Lexington School Committee

Discussion about the German language program at has landed back on the Lexington School Committee’s agenda after a handful of parents at a meeting last month.

Despite the display of support for the continuation of the German program, school administrators said plans to phase out the program was a result of dwindling interest in German as other languages become more popular among students.

“This was not a precipitous decision,” Carol Pilarski, an assistant superintendent and former foreign language teacher, told Patch in an interview last month.

While residents addressing the School Committee suggested pursuing grant funding as a means for preserving the German program, school officials said this curriculum decision was not made out of budgetary concerns.

When the issue last arose, School Committee Chair Margaret Coppe explained that, as discussion about the German program was not an agenda item, her board was limited in how it could respond to input from the public. Individual members of the board, however, did ask about how curriculum decisions like this one are made.
