AIREF Study Confirms Burglar Alarm Effectiveness

Ever wonder what goes on in the mind of a Burglar?  The thought of actually violating the private space or property of another individual is so dark and foreign that most of us are unable to give it continuous thought.  However, those in the business of protecting business and homeowners – i.e law enforcement and security companies, have keen interest in what attracts or motivates a burglar to strike.  Recently, the Alarm Industry Research & Educational Foundation (AIREF) published a report providing detail on how burglars choose the locations to rob, what they avoid, and the methods used while breaking the law.

The study surveyed approximately 400 incarcerated burglars and found that over 80 percent of them made sure to check for the presence of an alarm system before burglarizing a building. This comes as no surprise to anyone that has invested in a quality security system.  Furthermore, more than half reported that they elected to move on, once they were aware of an alarm.  If this discovery occurred during the crime, 50 percent stopped in their tracks and moved on to an unprotected target.
