Bay State Games: 14 Saves for Foley as Metro/Southwest Beats Central

Lexington's Shane Foley's solid second half showing helped Metro/Southwest hold off Central.

Metro/Southeast kicked off its Bay State Games with a 9-7 win over Central yesterday at Wentworth Tech's Sweeney Field, on the strength of four goals from Medford's Ryan McCarthy and 14 saves from goalie Shane Foley.

"Shane really stepped up in the second half," Metro/Southeast coach Mike Simone said. "If he hadn't made a couple of those saves at the end, they might have come back to beat us."

Metro/Southeast controlled yesterday's game from the start, as Lexington's Danny Gill fired in an unassisted goal late in the first quarter to put the team up 3-0.

Metro/Southeast led 6-3 at the half, and 8-5 in the fourth quarter, before Central went on a two-goal run and had a two-man advantage down 8-7 with five minutes left. Medford's McCarthy then scored unassisted on a breakaway to push the lead to 9-7.

"To be honest, I had no idea we were two men down," McCarthy said. "I got the ball, and for some reason they didn't slide to me, so I just put it in."
