The following press release was provided by Leslie Wilcott-Henrie on behalf of Bates College Athletics.
On March 3, 2012, Bates College and Skidmore College will play a lacrosse game dedicated to the life and memory of Morgan McDuffee, a 1997 graduate of where he was a standout athlete, captaining both the football and lacrosse teams.
In 2002, McDuffee was a senior at Bates College, an accomplished student and co-captain of the lacrosse team, when he was killed breaking up a fight in Lewiston, Maine. To compound the tragedy for the Lexington community, several days later David Germaine, a close friend of Morgan's brother and a junior lacrosse player at LHS, was killed in a car accident returning from visiting the McDuffee family in New Hampshire.
March 3 marks the 10th anniversary of McDuffee’s death, and in his honor Bates and Skidmore will play a regular season, non-conference game at Tufts University’s Bello Field, with face-off scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Both teams have strong ties to Morgan McDuffee: Jack Sandler, Skidmore head coach, was a close friend and teammate at Bates, and Bates head coach Peter Lasagna was in his second year coaching at Bates when McDuffee was killed.
Following his death, the foundation Morgan’s Fund was created to support educational efforts surrounding non-violent conflict resolution for at-risk youth. These outreach efforts include programs with MetroLacrosse in the Boston area, as well violence prevention curriculum for elementary and middle school students. At the game, there will be information about the foundation and various opportunities to support Morgan’s Fund.
The game will showcase teams from two of the best DIII conferences in the country, with Skidmore ranked nationally in the Top 20 in pre-season polls. Players from over a dozen greater Boston communities will be playing for Bates and Skidmore on March 3, including LHS graduates Alex and Conor Henrie for the Bates squad.
As the first-ever meeting between these two teams, it promises to be an exciting and important event.
