Mosquito Control Measures in Lexington

As reports of West Nile Virus are popping up in nearby communities, public health officials in Lexington announce upcoming catch basin treatments.

Over the next two weeks, Lexington public health officials and the East Middlesex Mosquito Control project will treat more than 4,000 local catch basins as a mosquito control measure, according to an announcement.

The catch basin treatments come as reports emerge of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus  being discovered in nearby communities including Burlington, Reading and Wakefield

By treating catch basins containing standing water, officials aim to prevent the emergency of Culex mosquitoes, which are the primary vectors of WNV, according to the announcement.

Over the next two weeks, residents can expect to see a handful of trained and licensed pest control technicians from the East Middlesex Mosquito Control team traveling the streets by bicycle and dropping a water-soluble larvacide into catch basins, which will prevent the mosquito larva from growing into biting adults. Treated catch basins will be marked with white paint on their covers.
