Getting Rid of the Stigma of Mental Illness

Stigma of Mental Illness to be Discussed at Temple Isaiah October 27

One in six adults and one in five children have a diagnosable mental illness. The stigma of mental illness can create feelings of isolation and shame. Up to two thirds of people with a mental illness never seek treatment. Often family members hesitate to reach out for the support they need.

The Mental Health Initiative and the Sisterhood Social Action Committee of Temple Isaiah will sponsor an event “Getting Rid of the Stigma of Mental Illness” on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln Street, Lexington, Massachusetts from 2:00 to 4:30 pm.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Kim Mueser, Executive Director of the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University. Dr. Mueser is a clinical psychologist whose clinical and research interests include family psycho-education, the treatment of co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders, psychiatric rehabilitation for serious mental illnesses, and the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. He will speak about his research and ways to combat stigma. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.

Following questions and answers, there will also be small group discussions that will use some “what-if” scenarios, which will give a practical context to eradicating the stigma of mental illness.
