Police Log: B-and-E Arrest and a Dog-Bitten Buttocks

The following information from May 14 to May 17 was provided by the Lexington Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Monday, May 14 10:37 a.m. – Police responded to a reported residential breaking-and-entering on Lowell Street. Sandra Abboud, 52, of 27 Fox Meadow Lane, Arlington, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with the intent to commit a felony.  1:03 p.m. – A vehicle reportedly struck a pedestrian on Bedford Street. 6:21 p.m. – As a result of a motor vehicle accident on Bedford Street, Eldred C. Richards, 23, of 45 Ocean Avenue, Winthrop, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle after his license was suspended. 7:35 p.m. – Suspicious activity was reported in the area of Brookwood Road and Fairfield Drive. 7:39 p.m. – Theft from a locker was reported on Bedford Street. 8:21 p.m. – A past larceny was …

Your Pick for the Best Place to Grab Memorial Day Grillables Is…

The votes, comments and reviews have been tallied and Lexington Patch readers have picked their favorite place to find the fixins for your Memorial Day cookout.

And it was the Meat House by a hair. Only six votes were cast in this week’s Best of Patch Readers’ Choice poll, so two votes was all it took for the Meat House in Arlington to be your pick for the best place around Lexington to grab grillables and groceries for a Memorial Day cookout. Sohini Pillai, a senior Theatre Studies and South Asia Studies major at Wellesley College from Lexington, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant.

The following information was provided by Wellesley College. Lexington resident Sohini Pillai, a senior Theatre Studies and South Asia Studies major at Wellesley College, was awarded a full Fulbright Scholar grant to India where she will conduct research on how the performing arts in India, specifically, different theatrical versions of the ancient epic poem The Ramayana, can promote positive messages of pluralism and harmony. The performances she plans to research range from the traditional Ramlila theatre in Old Delhi to an innovative Bharatanatyam dance-drama, and a rock-musical combining Indian folk dance and theatre forms with salsa, ballet, jazz, and Shakespeare. Sohini will conduct this research under the mentorship of Professor …

Technological Landscapes: The Revolution in Lighting

Lexington-based QD Vision, Inc., a nanotechnology company, is a leader in the use of quantum dots to dramatically improve lighting.

  The United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that lighting in the United States represents about 25 percent of our total energy usage. As a result, considerable effort is underway in academia and industry to develop more efficient light sources to replace incandescent bulbs that are only 10 percent efficient in converting electrical current into light. The first lighting improvement in over one-hundred years is the curly-cue shaped compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) that is three times more efficient than the incandescent lamp. Still, most of its output energy is lost as heat. The invention of the blue light-emitting-diode (LED) is three times more efficient than the CFL but has serious color problems. Its color is …
